What to Do in Sydney During The Summer

Sydney is a popular tourist destination year-round. With gorgeous beaches, fun festivals, lovely summer weather, and an overall welcoming atmosphere, it’s no wonder why so many people visit each year. So if you’re planning a Sydney summer vacation, we can assure you that you won’t find yourself lacking things to do.

There’s so much to do in the summer that it can be overwhelming for first-timers. Summertime in Sydney is a hotbed of activity. So, where do you even start to plot your itinerary?

We wrote this blog post to highlight some of the most popular summer events in the city. It’s impossible to fit all of the fantastic sights and activities into a single trip, but these picks offer a broad sample of what you can look forward to.

1. Christmas Celebrations

Christmas in Australia is a little different from what you might expect. For starters, December is summertime down under, ensuring warm weather day and night. There are numerous public events throughout the city to celebrate Christmas, including fireworks, concerts, and carolling, to name a few.

Sydney is an extraordinary place to celebrate the holidays because of all the displays. St. Mary’s cathedral gets covered in lights from top to bottom, painting the building in beautiful glowing colours. You’ll also find massive Christmas trees and other holiday displays throughout the city.

2. Sunset Cinema

You can catch screenings of new and classic films at Sunset Cinema between December and March. All four locations (including one in North Sydney) offer a unique outdoor movie-going experience, complete with a massive screen, skylights, and food trucks. Chances are you haven’t had a movie-going experience quite like this.

You might be thinking this is just a drive-in theatre, but it’s not. Sunset Cinema is an open-air theatre-seating venue. As a result, every patron enjoys the open air and balmy weather during the show.

A night at Sunset Cinema also makes for a great picnic opportunity! The venue allows you to bring and enjoy your own food while taking in a show. The only ban is on alcohol, though vendors are licensed to sell it on site.

3. Shelly Beach Manly Snorkelling Tour

Sydney has no shortage of beautiful swimming locations, both natural and man-made. But what if you want to explore Australia’s coasts with a closer eye? Snorkelling tours off the coast of Shelly Beach Manly offer you that chance.

Each tour gives you and seven other people an intimate look at Australia’s marine wildlife and their natural habitats. After providing safety and snorkelling lessons, instructors take their groups on guided dives, with tours for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike. A tour lasts two hours, but add-ons are available.

4. Walk the Coasts and Cliffs

Sydney has truly breathtaking geography and some of the most beautiful locales in Australia. There is no shortage of walkways in the area, traversing clifftops, beaches, and natural parks. The most popular is the Federation Cliff Walk, which spans the length of Watsons Bay to Dover Heights.

The cliff walk features so many branching paths of its own that you’ll have no problem finding a private, quiet spot to enjoy nature. Along the way, you’ll have opportunities to spot wildlife and art. Both ends of the trail feature great places to relax and grab a bite to eat. It’s a great way to start or end your day.

5. Bondi Beach

Without a doubt, Bondi is one of the most active areas in all of Sydney, with its beach serving as a central hub. Hotels and shops line the beach, representing various interests and cultures, and there’s always a lively crowd on the sand soaking up rays. It’s a place to get together with friends or make new ones.

One of the most popular activities on Bondi Beach is surfing, with certified instructors offering lessons daily. Bondi Icebergs, the beach’s oldest swimming pool and club, offers ample space to swim in a controlled environment. But, of course, the beach itself is watched over by lifeguards all year, so you’re in good hands if you choose to tackle some waves.
