Amazing Things to Do in Sydney During The Winter

Sydney is fantastic in the wintertime, and you might be wondering if it’s worth the trip during the cooler temperatures of June 1 through August 31. Since winters in Sydney are quite pleasant and rather mild, you can enjoy the city and all of its beautiful attractions quite comfortably.

Sydney is Australia’s largest and more popular travel destination. The city is best known for its harbourfront Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour, Circular Quay, Harbour Bridge, and the outdoor platform of the Sydney Tower, Skywalk.

As you can see, there is no shortage of things to see in Sydney. But what about the best attractions to visit in the winter? We’ve got you covered. Here is our list of the top 5 activities to do while you’re in Sydney during the winter season.

Top 5 Winter Activities in Sydney

1. Vivid Sydney

Vivid Sydney attracts more than two million visitors each year. It is undoubtedly one of the best activities to do in our beloved city.

The festival historically takes place in August and projects its images and forms for three weeks —  you can see the city transforming into a kaleidoscope full of colour, shapes, lights and ideas through the different facilities to discover in this festival.

Vivid Sydney is all about taking an illuminated walk through Sydney at night during the winter with the children (or without) completely free of charge! As you walk, you can see illuminated iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbor Bridge, the Australian Museum of Contemporary Art, and Barangaroo.

This year, Vivid Sydney has been rescheduled to accommodate safety precautions and will be back starting on September 19th.

2. Sea Life Sydney Aquarium

Sea Life Sydney offers the best collection of Australia’s diverse marine life with over 13,000 different sea creatures. The aquarium is a must-see. It even has a section especially for penguins.

Sea Life Sydney  is not only used for entertainment but also contributes to the conservation of marine life. The treatment and care of the animals is of the utmost priority, and the aquarium has special programs specifically for reintroducing animals into their natural habitat.

General admission has a cost of $17.50 for each adult, per attraction. Be sure to check the website for COVID-19 updates, opening and closing times, and the best ways to plan your day.

3. Manly Whale Watching Tour

If following the path of marine animals is a bucket list item for you, then you cannot miss the exciting Manly Whale Watching Tour as they admire marine animals while migrating in the winter months.

These majestic animals migrate from Antarctica to the warmer waters of the tropical north of Queensland to give birth and raise their young before returning to the south.

Be sure to book in advance to avoid missing your preferred whale watching departure date.

4. Coogee to Bondi Walk

Coogee to Bondi Walk tour has the biggest highlight — you end up on the most famous beach in Australia, Bondi Beach. At Bondi Beach, you can see spectacular natural attractions such as Gordon’s Bay, Clovelly Beach, Bronte Beach, and Tamarama Beach throughout this walk. In addition to other tourist attractions such as the Bowling Club, Waverly Cemetery.

The Coogee to Bondi Coastal Walk is a 6km stretch in the eastern suburbs of Sydney and boasts stunning views of the sea, beaches, parks, cliffs, bays, and rock pools worth seeing — even in winter! It takes about two hours to complete and is a fun and active medium-grade activity with hills, stairs, and large surfaces.

Along the way, there are endless picnic spots, barbecues, restrooms and changing rooms, and cafes or restaurants for you to use freely.

5. Madame Tussauds Wax Museum

When the weather outside is a little cooler than usual, head indoors to experience the world-famous wax sculptures of Madame Tussauds right in Darling Harbour. Inside the museum, you can get up close and personal with the wax version of your favourite celebrities like Johnny Depp, Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift, and more. Make it your own red carpet night.
